Abbess Thaisia, a spiritual daughter of the Russian luminary St. John of Krondstadt (+1908), was herself an outstanding spiritual guide renowned through Russia. This very book of her Letters was so popular and beneficial for those leading a spiritual life that in pre-Revolutionary Russia the Holy Synod reprinted it several times and distributed it to all monasteries and sketes and to many parishes. It was the main guidebook for female monastic aspirants, giving them a right understanding of how to dedicate their lives to God. Although these letters of Abbess Thaisia were written for monastics, the spiritual principles in them can be applied, with discernment, to the lives of all Christian strugglers-- both monastic and lay-- leading them into closer communion with God through a deepened experience of prayer, an advancement in virtue, and a more diligent practice of the commandments of Christ.
